Personally, I would not put The Kite Runner or A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius or Da Vinci Code alongside anything by Jane Austen, Kurt Vonnegut, J.D. Salinger, or even John Irving. I feel a huge void in there. What about Pearl S. Buck's The Good Earth - truly a work that transcends time, politics, geography - just to name one.Treehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08674149698867826312noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21720308.post-15276279814681569022007-11-15T08:59:00.000-06:002007-11-15T08:59:00.000-06:00I think of a classic as something older, so I woul...I think of a classic as something older, so I wouldn't call a book published two years ago a classic, no matter how much I loved it.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21720308.post-25172028869079765752007-11-15T08:47:00.000-06:002007-11-15T08:47:00.000-06:00I had to go check it out of course. Hemingway.

Some were surprises, such as Life of Pi (which, although a book club fave, was gratuitous IMO). And Bleak House?
