Confession time

I'm ashamed to admit it, but I think--right now--that I have a favorite child. I love Jo utterly; this summer's events brought that home like nothing else could have. She's funny and sweet and affectionate and generally well behaved. I love to spend time with her and am so proud of everything she can do (and wants to do and tries to do).

But Opie, at least lately? It's like he's made out of candy and Champagne and ice cream all rolled into one. Even when he's being a typical 3-year-old pain in the butt I can't stop thinking about how much I adore him. I don't know if it's a mother-son thing, or a youngest child/baby lust thing, or something else entirely. He's smaller, snugglier, and, well, just kind of cuter than his sophisticatedly 6-year-old sister. He still makes hilarious, nonsensical pronouncements (the other day he reported that he'd had tacos for lunch and they made "all the babies in my tummy really sick." Duly noted, then, no more tacos, and also, I'll alert the media). I can still carry him around on my hip and at bedtime, he says "Mommy, dance me a wittle" and rests his head on my shoulder.

Anyway, I defy you not to fall for a guy like this (10 seconds):

Please tell me I am not crazy. Well, except for letting my child out in public wearing the jetfighter print shorts with the striped polo and bright red boots. Or for letting him use the patio table (where we, like, eat and stuff) as his stage. Okay fine.

Oh you must have more patience than I. My son talks nonstop and then when I'm about to strangle him lets loose something like: Mama? You're sooo pwetty.

Grrr.

Love your son's outfit though. He's a rockstar. I can tell.

This is hysterical. I have a 5.5 year old and a 3.75 year old. The 3.75 year old is not potty trained, nor will he go near a toilet. There's lots about him that makes me want to scream but for some reason, he just seems so squeezable right now and the 5.5 year old is just so big......how did he get so big?

I feel bad even typing this out because I know I don't favor one over the other, I'm sure it is just hormonal...yea, let it be horonal.

Total total rockstar! Until the Star Wars bug hit hard, that was our household too.

Here's hoping that kid overcomes his shyness real soon.

You're a mind-reader. I was just thinking yesterday of how I adore Tacy, but it's CJ who makes me melt - for all the reasons you noted (except for the mother-son part, of course).

I guess that's why I let her stand on my chair, with one arm around my neck in a headlock, beaming at that video of Opie, asking to watch it over and over again (while I obliged her, of course).

I thought that was a perfectly acceptable fashion statement. I wouldn't think twice about letting one of my children leave the house like that.

Watch out American Idol!

Agreed. How could you not love him to pieces? He's so much fun!

Oh my - thank you, because I've been walking around thinking in the back of my mind that I've been sort of leaning toward a favorite, just due to the present ages, you know?

I feel exactly the same way about my youngest daughter.

Those boots rock! He's on his way to stardom, no doubt.

And your feelings are quite normal. I say love every minute now because REALLY fast he'll be a teenager and you'll be all, "Is it okay if I prefer Jo for now?"

Of course it is!

Good to know that I am not the only one with a three year old who likes to scream/sing at the top of her lungs. It must just be a thing.

It took me a week to find the time, but I had to come find this post. You know I understand exactly what you mean. I really think (in my case) it's that youngest child thing, but the sweetness and light certainly don't hurt.

Great post! And yes, he is adorable.
