Except it wasn't her heart Jo left in San Francisco. It was her appendix.
Instead of Chinatown and the Golden Gate Bridge we are touring the emergency room and children's ward. My big girl has an IV taped to her arm, plastic bracelets on both wrists and three small, heart-shaped bandages on her belly. She hasn't had a bite of solid food since Friday evening.
Yes, our child had a ruptured appendix and instead of taking her to the doctor, we put her on a plane and flew her halfway across the country. You can line up right behind us for the Jerks of the Year award.
She needs four or five days of intravenous antibiotics and recovery time. It's been 24 hours since the surgery and she can barely stand to move an inch or be touched anywhere on her body.
Which is to say: I may not make it to BlogHer. And the thing is, I don't even care. I've been looking forward to it since the minute I drove away from the W last year, and I have lots of new friends I really wanted to meet this time (not to mention old ones to see again). But right now, the only place I want to be is next to this bed, in this vinyl-covered recliner, waiting for my sweet girl to smile again.

Oh no! Poor wee baby. And poor you, too. wishing her a speedy recovery.
oh poor little thing!
Oh, man, scary stuff. I will send every good thought your way.
Oh no - I'm so sorry for you and your poor wee girl. Hope she feels better soon and you make it after all...
Oh honey. We're so sorry that we missed you Sunday. Our little drummer boys will have to meet and Jo can see the fancy dresses another time. Still hoping to see you this coming weekend, but more importantly, we're wishing her a swift recovery.
Oh that's awful. Speedy healing vibes heading her way!
well, it's good you guys were able to get it taken care of. she needs to recover, and she will, but before you know it she'll be running, laughing, and chattering again.
i hope to see you at blogher, but if not, i'll know you're where you need to be. :)
I've been sniffling ever since I got your voice mail, but that picture pushed me right over the edge.
I'm just so glad that she's in good hands and doing well. I'll be there to hug you (and hopefully her too) tomorrow night.
That didn't sound right. I meant that I hope she'll accept me as a bedside visitor.
Oh no! Oh no, how awful for her -- and what a trouper, my god, she made it through the plane flight? I think she's my new hero.
Awwww, poor baby!
How absolutely awful. I'm so sorry to hear that. Sending good wishes.
Oh no. I hope she bounces right back - and you too.
Do you need anything??
I am so so sorry! :(
Sending you wishes for a speedy recovery. Poor baby!
Oh! You poor sweeeties! I'm hoping for a quick recovery and a smile soon.
oh no...poor li'l Jo. and poor mama...that bedside wait. i hope she feels better soon, and i hope you go gentle on yourself. ;)
How awful for you and for your little one! If it's any consolation, it's hard to spot appendicitis in a young one. It can masquerade as many other, less serious, illnesses. Hugs to both of you!
Get Well Soon, little one!!
Hang in there, mom!
of course blogher doesn't matter when it comes to something like this. and it shouldn't.
will miss you. and if i don't miss you, then i'll be happy to see you.
big hugs
Oh, Mayberry, I'm so sorry for you and Jo. Hang in there & enjoy your time helping her recover. Remember there will be lots of BlogHers to come. And will you have a story to share next year!
omg omg omg - oh my holy heck - I am so sorry and wishing her a speedy recovery. And I would never EVER in a million zillion years call you a jerk. You are too cool and kind to a jerk. Dang, I'm missing you already.
Wishing sweet one a speedy recovery and my thoughts are with you!
OH no! But if you're in SF, you're probably at CPMC which is one of the best hospitals to be at with your daughter. Hope all's well.
sending love and healing thoughts!
How scary. I am thinking of you and your family and hoping for quick healing.
Don't beat yourself up. I am sure if you knew it was a ruptured appendiz you'd have acted differently. It isn't an everyday kind of thing.
had mine out when i was six. i remember the entire thing super-clearly. your poor babe.
i CAN'T BELIEVE i'm gonna miss meeting you again. this is two years in a row. (only, last year, apparently we kept leaving/entering the same room at the same time, which = frustrating as hell.)
sigh.
give that sweetheart some keesles. and keep one for yrself.
xoxo Deb
