As a know-it-all teenager I thought that the way to stave off old fogy-dom was simply to continue listening to top-40 radio. Because then you would continue to be cool.
And that, my friends, is my excuse for the lameness which follows. Instead of the seven songs I'm listening to right now (because really, that list would be "grandpa songs [the CD my dad made for the kids] track 1, grandpa songs track 2, grandpa songs track 3," etc.), I give you the seven songs that are guaranteed to make me smile, sing along, and usually bust a move too.
1. When Ragtime Rosie Ragged the Rosary: I've already written about why I love this one.
2. Stacy's Mom from Fountains of Wayne's Welcome Interstate Managers. Because it reminds me of Tacy's mom, and because we used to drive by the store that inspired the band's name all the time when we lived in New York.
3. Stand from REM's Green. College nostalgia I.
4. Walking on Sunshine, Katrina & the Waves. If this song doesn't make you happy then you have a heart of stone, is all I'm saying.
5. Here Comes My Baby, Cat Stevens on the Rushmore soundtrack. If I have to pick just one from this compilation, this is the one.
6. Sweet Child O' Mine. GNR, baby. College nostalgia II.
7. Who's Your Baby Now from Mark Knopfler's solo album Sailing to Philadelphia. Enchanting, lyrical, lilting, love the whole album.

Oh yeah, Tacy's mom has got it goin' on...
But why oh why do you have to spark memories with each and every post? Remember how we took the girls to Willowbrook Mall to get their pictures taken together, which of course entails passing by THE Fountains of Wayne?
Sigh.
There's another Fountains of Wayne song that Tacy loves - "Fire Island". And since you are all Top 40 and Grandpa Songs, I think I might need to make you a mix CD with that gem on it, among others.

If I had an iota of singing talent, I would rock the karaoke circuit with Sweet Child O' Mine. Luckily, I don't, so no one will be subjected to my very strained falsetto.
Dude, you listed two albums that I love. Knofler's solo deal is really, really good. I like it even better than some o)of the Dire Straits stuff, but don't tell Jeff I said that :o)
Also the Rushmore sountrack is great. Concrete and Clay by Unit 4+1 was our wedding song. It's just so happy and peppy and great to dance to.
I LOVE Stacy's Mom because my daughter's name is Anastasia and although we don't call her Stacy, we could, and when I hear that song I can pretend they are singing about me. I guess that makes me crazy/needy or something but it makes me feel good anyway. Great list!

Oooh, the Rushmore soundtrack. I'm all over that. The soundtrack from John Cusak movies are also usually fan-tab-u-lous.
I'm going to have to go and listen to some of these before I can actually comment BUT GNR Sweet Child O Mine is one of our favorites.

Also, since you like Mark Knopfler, have you heard his album with Emmylou Harris? It's called "All the Roadrunning," and it's fab-u-lous. And perfect for Spring!
I'm still trying to figure out mine choices. I hardly ever get to listen to MY music ... think pre-pre-teen/Disney and you'll get the drift!
