Dropping like mother-effing flies

As of two months ago at work, I was part of a small group that also included an editor-in-chief, a managing editor, a web producer, and a production assistant (a full-time, long-term temp).

Mid-February: My boss resigns.
Monday: The managing editor has surgery, goes out on medical leave for 3-5 weeks.
Today: I learn that the producer has resigned.

My team is now me and a temp.

This can NOT be good.

Turnover bites. And what also bites is that everyone knows how to prevent it, but isn't willing to follow through. Another producer in the department, the mother of a one-year-old, quit recently after trying for months to negotiate some kind of flexible work arrangement. Come on, managers. Give people a little freedom and a little credit, and 98% of the time you'll be richly rewarded.

Crap. I hope it works out...

I've been there before. It's not fun at all. Especially when the management is unwilling to change to stem the tide.

Yikes! I hope you can recruit some new people ASAP.

I totally hear you on management shooting itself in the foot by being unwilling to bend even a little. BTDT and it's so frustrating.

I have long believed that there is a huge untapped workforce of moms who would like to work a flexible schedule / job share, etc. Any company that could successfully adopt such policies that would entice these women would be repaid in loyalty and work ethic.

I hope it works out and that you are not left trying to keep the ship afloat.

I know exactly where you're at, believe me... On occasions like this, telecommuting sucks. With my own situation, I feel really vulnerable, not just because I've got a sweet deal but also because I can't advocate for myself. Email and telephone are useful but they just can't compete with facetime in that regard.

I hope you're able to give input as mgmt chooses new team members for you.

You know, my employer would probably get MORE out of me if I had a 20-30 hour work week than they currently get at 40 hours.

Crossing fingers for you.

This is why I quit the job I had before becoming a parent. My big boss' idea of flexibility was letting me take my federally-required FMLA leave. Then back to a regular work week (plus extra hours on demand) with no flex schedule ever. Nope.

After I left he got demoted. Ha.

grrrrrrrrrr - so simple to prevent but NOOOOOOOOO it can't work that way. The inflexible management needs to learn to bend in this world that is no longer 9-5 M-F. Gawd I hope you can keep your sanity (you are sane right?).

I wish more companies would realize just how *loyal* employees are to places that give you that extra flexibility. Good luck.
